The Great Sunflower Project

I love public radio and I listen to it on my commute all week.  Yesterday, on Making Contact, the topic was honey bees.  You are probably aware, like I was, that there has been a decline in the honey bee population.  We have family friends who are bee keepers and they move their bees all around the state, especially to the almond farms here in California.  Anyhow, it was a very interesting story and I urge you to check it out here

But the reason for my excitement was the discussion about the Great Sunflower Project!  Did you know that you could plant a sunflower in your backyard and become part of a group researching the health of bees in urban areas?  How cool is that?!  All you do is sit down for 15 minute periods, once your sunflower is in full bloom, and count the number of bees that land on your sunflower.  Even better though, you are providing resources for bees in your area.  And while you are at it, I encourage you to plant more plants that bees like, and you might as well plant something to attract the hummingbirds and butterflies too.  It will make time in your garden much more enjoyable.

So the bird shop will be busy planting a sunflower or three when the season comes around again.  I hope you will join us!  We saw our first hummingbird last week.  Now we just need that butterfly....

Cheers,
this little bird
