One thing that came out of my research was the fact that cats consider vertical space as territory too. I told Mr. Bird we should do some kind of "shelving thing" for the cats. HE decided the stairwell would be a great place!?! I wasn't on board at first, but I went along with it and now I think it's pretty neat. Here is what he did!
Cleo taking a closer look. (Can you believe how big she is?) |
Ta da! She made it. This also gives you a better idea of the wall in full. |
This past weekend the boys gave it a try. Pepito took his time. |
AND, he's up! |
Loki couldn't be left out of the fun. |
Yay. Total cat immersion! |
Now for the details. We got a 10ft long board from the hardware store. I can't remember as I type this if it is 6 or 8inches deep. I think it's 6 inches. Mr. Bird cut the board in 2 foot pieces. He drilled the brackets into the wall and then drilled the shelf into the bracket. The shelves are roughly 19 inches apart vertically.
We still need to spend more time in the stairwell just hanging out so they will try to use it more, but Mr. Bird confirmed it's super cool to be outside and see a little face up in that window!!
Hope you are all doing well!
Cheers!

Lovely shelves! Great photos with the cats as models. Just don't tell them, they would want more kittie-bitties.
ReplyDeleteWonderful!! I had no idea the stairway had a fun window at the top. It looks like a fantastic kitty playground! Great idea and great job!!
ReplyDeleteThis is SO amazing!!! I always wanted to do something like this for our cats but never have. Your post is encouraging me to get moving on it!
ReplyDeleteThat is so frustrating about the spraying :( my husband's cat pees outside the box (literally right outside, most of the time, and on any throw rugs we have laying around). it's so hard to deal with. i hope in Pepito's case it's a one time thing and goes away.
Have you thought about gluing/stapling/nailing rug remnants on some of the shelves? i was just thinking it might make the shelves more inviting for the cats and get them to use them more. i would be worried about my cats slipping and falling off--but they would probably do that anyway (the kittens, anyway!)
Your cats are lucky to have you guys for their family!
Thanks everyone. I think Mr. Bird did a very good job.
ReplyDeleteMothra Sue, we actually bought sisal rope to put on the shelves but we both got very excited and forgot all about it. So far, except for before all the shelves were up, no one has taken a tumble. Pito actually has enough room to turn around on the second step so he can get up to the third, although if we do it again I will keep that in mind and orient things differntly. This is definitely a work in progress so we may add some fun things.
WHAT A WONDERFUL PROJECT AND GIFTEE FOR THE KITTIES! GOOD JOB GUYS.
